"Dont BUY this!" 2009-10-18

I didnt buy this from Amazon, I bought it directly from Oreck about 3 yrs ago. The main reason why I think you should not buy this is because of the trouble cleaning it. It is practically impossible to get it clean of tar. I bought this primarily to clean the air of cigarette smoke. The late night commercials I saw before purchasing this showed people just rinsing it under water and they were done. WOW I wish! I paid full price a few years ago ( I think I actually paid 500$ and was supposed to get a free small vac with it, I never received the Vac). I have tried just about every thing to clean the tar out of the collector cell, for example bathroom cleaners of all sorts, laundry detergent, oven cleaner, degreaser. I have tried soaking the cell all day in hot water and with full strength cleaning products, and even tried washing the cell in the dishwasher, but nothing works very well. And you cant use a cloth to clean between the fin's of the collector cell because of some hair thin wires and the very close spacing of the fins.

This air cleaner works ok when brand new, but cleaning this thing is a major pain, because you also have to completely dry the cell(as mentioned in the manual or you could damage the unit), I use a fan to help dry the cell after cleaning, and it takes all day because there are places on the cell where water gets in that are covered. As other reviewers have mentioned the cell HAS to be cleaned OFTEN, or else you get the very loud bug zapper noises(and sparks) that get worse and worse the dirtier it gets.

Humidity also affects the unit, the more humid it is the more it makes the zapping and electrical buzzing sounds.

I actually came here to the Amazon website to look for a new air cleaner, and I saw this model for sale, and I felt I had to give a review. I dont usually bother giving reviews(I think I am going to start giving more reviews because of this thing), and I hardly ever return items but I wish I could return this, it was a big waste of money and TIME trying to clean it. I have learned to always look at product reviews by other customers (like this one) before making a purchase if at all possible. Hopefully this helps someone else with making a decision between products.

This air purifier surpassed expectation. We've had others, including the Sharper Image nightmare of a purifier that was over $400 and died within a year.. So it was with hesitation that we ordered this unit and could not be happier. I too am surprised by the previous reviewer's comment that he has to clean it every day or so, I wonder if he has something in his house (i.e. smoke/lots of pets?) that might overload a unit. We have two cats and a large home and this purifier works wonders. I have only had to clean it once or twice a month and the occasional snap, crackle and pop are just reminders when it's time. We intend to buy more.

I bought a couple of these last year for I have some health problems that require me to be in a clean air environment. These have been great they really do a good job I leave mine on highest speed all the time which is noisy but when it comes to breathing fresh air this is well worth it. It does make some snapping sounds just before you need to clean it. This just lets me know that they need cleaning. I clean my cells with Clorox clean up cleaner I just squirt them then use hot water and the job is done. the only thing is that when it comes to drying the cell before using it it takes a while but this is my only complaint

I rarely write comments, but I use them for most every purchase from Amazon. Since there wasn't much here, I wanted to let everyone know my experiences with the Oreck XL air purifier.

There's only one review on here so far. The guy says he had to clean his machine every day? I've had mine, for awhile now. I've gone a couple weeks to a month and a half without cleaning the cell. Actually after a little more than a month, I just cleaned it last night. All I did was run it under the faucet and it did the job. I will need to clean it with soap and water soon though.

The only reason I can see this machine getting so dirty so fast like the other person says, is if it was in an oil based enviroment where the dirt would pile on and need to be scrubbed off.

Just an example here: My allergies got real bad last night after I had my water heater replaced. I suppose a lot of mold was kicked around from when it had been leaking. I got up in the middle of the night and ran the cell under water, with a little brushing here and there.

After letting it dry, I really noticed the difference when it started up. I then slept for hours comfortably.

The con: It makes a small snapping sound when it needs to be cleaned. I use that as a reminder. It doesn't constantly make the sound. I will from time to time, then more often as it gets dirtier. It is hardly noticable to me.

As for the charcoal filter. You don't need to have it. It is a plus. I haven't gotten a refill since I got my machine a long time ago. I am thinking about getting it though. A relative uses it and It makes the room feel and smell cleaner.

The theory behind this refill is that there is one perforated filter per box that can be broken in half for use as 2 filters with the Honeywell 40100 series air purifier.

That, at least, is the theory...

In reality, the filter is perforated as advertised; however, there is so much glue along the perforation holding the accordion folds together, that it is virtually impossible to break the filter in half.

I tried to break it by just flexing the perforation, as the directions indicated. It didn't separate. I tried flexing it harder and bending it back and forth to break them apart. The glue started separating at the folds. The glue coming apart caused the filter to open up at some of the accordion folds, so the filter was no longer round. I tried a knife to cut the two filters apart. Ditto on breaking up the accordion folds. Finally resorted to a hacksaw to separate them.

The only bright thing of the whole fiasco - they did finally work when I crammed them into the units.

After effectively almost destroying the filters I called the manufacturer (Honeywell) and they indicated that these are not the filters that they sell. They are an aftermarket item with the Honeywell logo. Honeywell does not endorse them. Surprise, surprise! They recommended that you only buy the replacement HEPA filters sold on the Honeywell website for the model 40100 air cleaner. I second that recommendation -- wholeheartedly!

We bought this filter for our new apartment after several weeks of feeling terrible (congestion, puffy watery eyes, feeling tired, coughing, etc.) because we knew there was some sort of non-hazardous mold and dust combo at the root of it. This puppy looked like it'd do the trick, and for 6 days, we felt awesome. It worked very well! But on day seven the rotator inside this thing literally fell off the axle and ceased to work any longer. We were unable to fix it ourselves, and we found that once we opened up the packaging, we owned it. No returns were permitted, but we were allowed to pay for S+H back to the manufacturer for them to fix it. [...] The problem I have with this item is that the price is six times our cheap filters', and Alen's ghetto manufacturer hotline and inability to provide us with a new, working filter, indicates it shouldn't be worth this much.

I have been looking at and searching for a decent air purifying unit for at least 3 years, I find the cost runs way to high and the looks of the unit definitely wasn't designed by anyone with designing taste! And even though the germicidal UV light should be completely hidden from view most of the air filtering UV units I have looked at had obvious glowing of the eye damaging UV lighting.

Now for my review of this item,

The looks-acceptable.

Noise level-acceptable on low speed during sleeping.

Controls and adjusting-My wife has no problems working it! (Now that says a lot!)

The Glowing of the UV lights-Almost literally impossible to see!

Does it work?-my wife thinks Claritin cured her of her allergies. It took about 6 to 8 weeks letting it run 24-7 but it will clean up the impurities in the house and before you know it your not sneezing! Well it worked for me wife.

Would I buy another unit-Yes if needed.

The cost- acceptable

My only problem with it is "How would I know if one of the UV germicidal lights go out?"

I'm the type of person that probably never give out 5 stars to nothing, but I will give out 9.5 out of a 10 point scale for this item.

This Rabbit Air hepa purifier is the best air purifier I have ever owned - and I've had several different brands.

I like the design, the way the filters fit in, the ease of keeping it clean, the washable charcoal filter, the anti-bacterial filter to help cut down on flu-type diseases and the remote control. As you can tell, I've not found anything I do not like about this machine.

My bedroom is dust-free most of the time now. I am not sneezing from allergies. There are no odors in the air.

I moved my oxygen concentrator into my bedroom so it could take advantage of the cleaner air.

When I received my Rabbit Air purifier, the charcoal filter wouldn't stay closed and was spilling charcoal. I called Rabbit Air and immediately was shipped a new charcoal filter. Customer support is great!

I will only buy Rabbit Air from now on. And, by buying the breast cancer machine, I donated to support breast cancer, too. It's all good.

I bought this product about a year ago, And if you are a smoker or have animals forget this one. A friend let us borrow another brand Ecoquest, when we were selling our house and the realtors could not smell the smoke in our house. We actually have it on tape ! I have tried this one in the new house and the paper filter I had to dispose in the trash about 3 months after buying it because all it did was recycle the dead air. I would come up from the basement and just smell it, ugh! As a smoker not a good thing and none of our kids smoke and they were not happy either! Adult kids so not to affend anyone! Does not help with the litter box either and we also have a Guinne pig. As far as allergies, this machine has not helped our family at all. We have been more sick than with the ecoquest. I am glad that we donated to the cure but I am buying an ecoquest.

This air purifier cleans the air well, and it's easy to clean the permanent filter. One drawback, though, is that it seems cheapy. After a few days, it makes an annoying rubbing noise. I returned it for a replacement, which still had the same problem. So I put some sewing machine oil at the top and the bottom of the spinning electrostatic cylinder, and that fixed the noise! It makes a typical fan noise when running, though, but that can be expected.

We've had this purifier for a little over 12 months now. We clean it as recommended. About 4 months after we purchased it the fan developed a buzz when it is on. It has just got worse as time has passed. So much, in fact, that we have to place the unit on its side in order for the buzz to go away. Not sure how effective the unit is on it's side, but it is in a small room so we are not asking it to purify a large area. It seems to be cleaning the air alright, but the durablity of the machine is its downfall. Look for something else.

Like the previous reviewer, I found the sound produced by this purifier to be unnacceptable. I should preface this by saying that I've been sleeping next to a very loud fan all summer and actually enjoy the white noise. The problem is, the noise that this purifier makes can only be described as a loud arhythmical plastic grinding. After running it for about a week and the noise actually getting worse I've decided to return it.

This air purifier looks stylish, but a little too big comparing to other similar air purifiers. They use cheap plastic for the unit's cover and carrying handle. That is still acceptable considering its low price. But, it is so badly designed that when I carry the unit, it seems that the handle would come off anytime.

The first time I turned it on, it sounded a little loud. I thought it was normal, so I gave it sometime to try out. It got even louder a few days later. Then, it was as if the fan was falling apart. So, I returned it. All I want is a decent air purifier, but it is so sad that it is defective. :(

Let me first say that I was very skeptic about these air purifiers in the first place... I only got one because my cat yes cat, had been sick for about a year with a running nose and eyes, weezing, and just plain sick. The vet bills were getting crazy! I had gotten x-rays and kitty drugs and I felt so bad as she was getting sicker. One day a nice lady at work asked me if anyone smoked in our building (we live in a two-flat). The couple downstairs did. So I bought the Honeywell with the filter that does not need to be replaced and holly cow! I leave it on day and night and in a matter of days kitty is all better! I really am so impressed and the hepa fillter is a must.

The smell in our place is fresh smelling as soon as you walk into the stairwell it smells of smoke. So if your pets are in the house all day spend the $100 bucks and give them some nice fresh air and more comfortable living enviroment.

I've used this product for almost 4 months now. I have had no problems with leaks or anything else. It works great. I live in an apartment, and only use it in my bedroom. Now that allergy season is here, I definitely notice the difference. My room is just fine, and pretty allergen free. When I walk out of my bedroom, I start getting a stuffy nose and sneezing from the allergens. It also does a good job in keeping my room humid.

I ordered this with high hopes and quickly became very disappointed. After the first day it began to leak excessively all over the floor. I took the unit apart to look for any obvious signs of a problem but found nothing. Put it back together again and within a day, it leaked again. I decided that I must have just gotten a "lemon" so I opted to replace it with another identical unit, which Amazon did replace very quickly-I had a new in 3 days! After the 3rd day of running the unit, it too began to leak excessively. Luckily, I had set the unit in a large rubber maid container so it did not leak all over the floor. I think there is an obvious manufacturer defect with this unit that must have been overlooked. I am currently searching for another product that is also an air cleaner & a humidifier all in one but am not having much luck. The design and concept of this one is very similar to the design of the Air O Swiss air washer. May give that one a try.

Yes, this cleaner is pretty loud, especially at the high setting. We have three, one for each bedroom. On its lowest setting, it adds a low rumble, similar to a fan, for sleeping - good if you work night shift or live in a noisy area. We have three cats and a large dog and for the first time in 11 years, our son has been without an upper respiratory infection. It is affordable and efficient.

I bought this to reduce the odor and freshen the air in my open-air cubicle. A co-worker wears very strong perfumed products and this purchase was an attempt to mitigate the smell without disturbing them. Despite being listed as best for closed rooms, it reduces the dust in my immediate work space, and the air coming out has very little perfume odor. However, the air coming out does smell like plastic offgassing, and it doesn't do enough to keep the air really clear of odor. That said, I think it does a terrific job for what I need it to do (reduce dust and odors in my immediate area) and would happily buy another one or recommend it to anyone with similar needs.

Honeywell put a light on the dial, which they never had before, and it is so bright it woke me up at night. I have to try and cover it now to block the light. However, for someone who wants a night light and an air purifier, it's perfect. For me, I think they're unnecessary and hope Honeywell removes them.

After the first week of using the product I began to notice a fine black dust around the rooms I was using it in. The BLACK DUST problem became worse and as it turns out it was from the carbon(charcoal) filter in this air purifier. The unit blows (exhaust) air straight up--about like a box fan on "High" setting. It does not clean off very easy as the dust particles are so fine and now I must repaint the rooms I used this in. I am returning this to the retailer tomorrow!

This air cleaner seems to work well, but as other reviews state, it's quite loud, even on the lowest setting. The description mentioned that this was the (newer) model with the permanent HEPA filter, however the unit I received was the (older) model with filters that require periodic replacement. The response from Amazon after inquiry to get and exchange for the described unit was "We are not currently set up for exchanges...". They went on further to say: "I've checked our records and see that you placed an order for the Honeywell 50150 version of this item please note this version does take a replacement filter." although the description clearly stated otherwise. The lesson learned is not rely on the descriptions given by Amazon, but look at the model number and research elsewhere what the item you're buying really is.

This is my 2nd Rabbit Air MinusA2. My first Rabbit air runs at fan speed lvl 3 non stop for one year already and it's still running well just like new(of course I do change filter after 1 yr). Why I don't pick up other brand? Because it is Small, Powerful, Quiet, Beautiful, Reliable, Efficient and it does make the air in my room so clean, lots of my friends come to my place they can tell the difference; and already 3 of them pick up Rabbit Air MinusA2 after they saw it. A lot good purifier out there and I believe most of the high end purifier they all perform well, but they are all in HUGE size.

Let me first say, I can't stand noise! This Air Filter works wonderfully, worth every penny and more, because not only does it work great, but unless it's on high you don't even know it's there. Let me also clarify, when it's on high, it's not loud enough to distract or even bother you while on a phone call. I love it, highly recommend it, and I bought two, and both are flawless.

Little warning to those that want to order more than one! Place individual orders, I had a small problem with the company only shipping me one, though my order was for two. They not only corrected my order, but gave me an extra filter free of charge. The company cares about its customers, however, I would still have preferred to receive my complete order on time.

Lastly, they look so cool! Really eye catching, and this combined with its quiet and extensive air filtration, leaves me a little lighter in the wallet, but hopefully my partner, two kitties, and I are healthier and happy for a long, long time.

Hi Everyone! I've purchased three of these Black MinusA2 780A's and am very happy with their performance. Based on the research that I have done, this product offers the best blend of form and function available, with it's highly effective air purification and it's unparalleled aesthetics as well as it's extremely quiet operation. As far as I can see it is the best overall product on the market today.

I also like the high level of automation and the light sensor that automatically puts the air purifier into silent mode and turns the purifiers' lights off 3 minutes after I turn my lights off to go to bed.

Another noteworthy aspect of the 780A is it's low level of energy use, between 8 and 58 watts depending on fan speed. The product essentially pays for itself in energy savings vs it's competitors over time, and the Rabbit Air products are also the quietest purifiers on the market due to their brushless motors, with their largest and loudest being this 780A model which produces only 25.6 dBA - 51.3 dBA from silent to turbo fan speed.

Other good products worth looking into are the Alen A350 and T300, the Blueair 402, 501, and 601, the Austin Health Mate air purifiers, as well as IQ Air and so on. But I think you will find that, although a bit pricey, this product is indeed the total package. Also, if you live in an apartment without pets and don't have major allergies, I would recommend selecting the Toxin Air Filter, it's great for filtering out the chemicals in the air from fresh paint and new furniture. I'm really pleased with this Honeywell air purifier. I definitely have noticed a difference in the freshness of the air and I love the fact that the filter is washable. I don't have to worry about getting any replacement filters. When it is time to clean the filter, a light comes on that reminds me to clean it and I simply wash the filter in the kitchen sink with some dishwashing detergent. When I see how dirty the water is from cleaning the filter, it makes me glad that the dirt was captured in the filter and not still circulating in the air in my house. A great product for anyone looking for easy maintenance!

Seemed to work for a month - then nothing. All it does is move air around and make noise. When you go to clean the filter because the indicator says it's dirty - there's no dirt there to clean.

It's also advertised as HEPA, when it is not.

Bought an Austin HM-400, and the difference is astounding. The HM-200 is more equivalent to this one in price and performance - worth a look.

I bought this unit at Home Depot after looking at many reviews.

I wanted to buy locally so I could returd it if the unit did not work for my purposes.

When I went to open the unit at home I noticed triple taping on the box.

Upon opening the box, I noticed the packaging didn't seem to be from the factory.

I inspected everything carefully. Seemed OK.

I plugged the unit in after reading the manual. I immediately noticed the unit indicated a dirty filter. The filter looked OK so I tried to reset the indicator to show "clean". No Go. I called the Honeywell #. They finally advised me to return the unit.

I did return it within 2 days to Home Depot.

I did let the unit run for 2 days but still could not reset the indicator.

Some observations: Fairly quiet even on Med. speed. Lots of ozone smell everytime I came close to the bedroom.

I asked to see a manager at the Knoxville Home Depot (9361 Kingston Pike).

I told him I suspected I bought a defective returned unit that had simply been repackaged. He told me there was a possibility it had been returned by someone and that it was just placed back for sale. "There is no way we can test to see if the unit is OK". He open up a new box in front of me. There was sigificant difference in packaging. He offered to knock off 10% for my time (close to 2 hours) and gas (52 miles).

I told him to take a hike.

I bought this air purifier because we were getting this musty moldy smell from our basement. We were also having breathing issues at night with always having stuffy noses. When I first got it I set it on high and kept it out in the hallway for about 3 days because there was a weird smell at first but that does go away. I usually run it on high out in the hallway during the day then I move it into the bedroom and set it on low at night. It's a bit noisy on high but not too bad and on the low setting it doesn't bother our sleep at all. As for our breathing issues we no longer have any as for when we wake up in the morning now we no longer have a stuffy nose and we're no longer waking up in the middle of the night to blow our noses. The musty moldy smell has also diminished greatly as well. I would highly recommend this Air Purifier.

I bought this product solely for providing "white noise" in my twins' nursery. During the day, when there is minimal noise in the house, I put it on the lowest or medium speed. In the evening, when the other kids are home (and bathing in the adjacent room,) I put it on the highest setting.

The highest setting I'd say is like sitting next to a running vacuum cleaner. The lowest setting would be tolerable for me if I had to have an air purifier in the room all the time.

Overall, they sleep much sounder since it has been in their room.... great for my intended purpose.

I was given this purifier (actually the similar 30748) after my landlord ordered to help with a neighbor's smoke. I had ordered a Surround Air 3000 for myself. I plugged this in and noticed how loud it was. The filter is like an accordion folded sheet of vinyl fabric single thickness. The unit emits air that smells like burning plastic for lack of better term - very strange but the unit is working fine or at least blows air. It actually makes the air smell worse that the smoke almost.

The Surround Air machine has a very thick paperlike hepa filter and various odor filters. The air coming out of it is sweet and fresh, but still too small to handle my living room. Compared to the Hunter though, it is much much better. It would be my advice to spend a little more on a better product that something you will toss in a year or so when you need to buy a new filter and realize it was not that good to begin with. We do not need more plastic junk clogging up the landfill.

It is expensive, but this is a very well made smooth unit that is very quiet. On medium it's still more quiet then the cheap fan in my computer. It does move a little bit of air, which can be cold if your sitting in front of it. So I moved it sideways, and now it does not blow air on me. The filter looks to be good with more cubic inches of actual filtration compared to the cheaper quacker box filtration units.

I ordered this unit last week and received it yesterday.

I must say, I am impressed and I knew I would be. This is such a great purchase. It has three speeds, the lowest is very quiet. I usually have it on 2nd speed because it is no louder than a small desk fan. The highest speed is about a loud as the AC on high, although I slept with it on high last night and didn't notice and I think I'm a light sleeper.

Overall, this product is great. The "ion" mode says it uses ions to make the room smell clean, but that is hard to tell. I will say, this unit makes my room smell a lot fresher and the air is better. The peace of mind with this unit is great.

The manual says it removes the common "pollutants" of Bacteria, Mold Spores, Pollen, Dust Mites and Viruses. Pollen and mold spores are 10-20 microns and a human hair has a diameter of 100 microns for comparison. So this unit traps very small, invisible particles that you would otherwise be breathing.

I received my first unit from Alen and it was slightly defective. The power switch worked, but the speed and Ion setting were flakey. After running the unit (stuck on low and no ion) the unit suddenly started working. I emailed Alen Product Support and they shipped me out another unit within 24 hours. I emailed them back to say it was working fine, but they insisted I get the 2nd unit anyway.

The 2nd unit worked as described and didn't have any problems out of the box. I am giving this product 5-stars based on its overall performance and the excellent Alen customer service.

I would also point out that this is not a "small" unit. At first, I thought it was meant for a desk or small stand, but this is 18" and a sleek 4-5" in width. The unit weighs next to nothing (and there's a smart cubby-handle) if you need to move it around often.

Removing the filters is a cinch and anyone can do this. However, Alen does recommend using gloves when changing out the filter every 6 months (if the unit is used continuously.)

The fan speed/noise factor is very good. The low setting is just quiet enough that one can easily sleep thru it (if placed in a bedroom.) The medium to high settings are probably going to be a bit too noisy if sleeping. It really depends on placement. At 10ft or so, you'll barely hear it running (on the low setting.)

The controls are well-designed and are easily managed. (The lights from the controls may light up a dark room, so that might be another reason to leave it off at night.)

One last note: the base of the unit does have a swivel. So the base stays one direction, and you can rotate the unit about 25 deg in each direction.

i put this in my bedroom for the following reasons:

-i would wake up during the night and in the morning feeling slightly sick and groggy

-my room (in an old brick building) smelled weird

the day i plugged this unit in i noticed a difference in my bedroom. i don't wake up with a stuffy head and the air quality is noticeably better. in the end, i feel better about spending time in my bedroom and worry less about the air quality there.

i don't know what the ionizing function does and have not turned it on. only used the air intake filter.

i'm considering getting the t300 for my parents' living room. they have a wood stove that they love but burning wood leaves a grimy film on the windows and walls, not to mention what it must be doing for my parents' lungs.

i would highly recommend this unit for a small room.

Don't believe the liberal haters. Beck wrote this book out of his love of country. He released it in the cheapest form possible, paperback, and is charging a third of most of the other books on the bestseller list right now. The price of the book pays for the printing and distribution, Beck is making next to nothing on it.

The book itself will fill you with anger over the corruption of our American system. It's hard to realize just how far we have fallen away from the liberties of our grandparents. Like Levin's book, Common Sense is makes a plea for more liberty and less government in America. It reminds us once again that we don't work to serve and please the government and politicans they work to serve us and our liberty.

I "read" the audio version of this book and, until the last chapter, would have given it a 5-star rating. Adam is an interesting narrator with a great voice, flawed and yet touchingly hopeful, and in one hell of a fix. The story's short chapters (of which there are almost a hundred) and multiple twists and cliff-hangers make from great suspense and, frankly, I enjoyed reading a thriller that doesn't depend on killers or kidnappers to bring the suspense! But then I got to the end of the book and found myself immensely frustrated, especially after so many hours listening to get there. It just... stops. I felt certain that the audio version had left out a page, a paragraph, even a LINE to clarify the end, but double-checked the print copy and, yeah, that's how it ends. I'd been hoping I'd found a writer I could really enjoy, but to me a good read is like an investment, and this one didn't pay off. So much for Finder. Those of you with a higher tolerance for the indeterminate, however, may very much enjoy Paranoia.

The characters are shallow, the plot is unengaging, and the first-person narrative makes reading it like living inside the head of a very dull person.

If drivel like this can get published and so well reviewed, it should give confidence to every aspiring writer out there, no matter how bad.

I have bought almost a dozen air purifiers over the last decade to help with cat allergies that I have. They have ranged from those made from the Hunter, Honeywell, Bionaire, etc. These were all intermediate units, ranging in price from $150 - $250 with HEPA filter technology. I don't have any cats, but if someone comes into the house that has a cat, the dander irritation to my eyes is detectable in minutes and can last for days after that individual has left. All of the air purifiers that I have used have "worked" to some degree, but they have two major drawbacks -- noise and energy consumption. I was drawn to the Rabbit Air MinusA2 by the use of its Brushless Direct Current Motor, which does have the potential to be more frugal with power than a traditional AC motor. In addition, the marketing for the Rabbit Air promotes leaving the Air Purifiers on 24 hours, something I am reluctant to do with past systems because of the noise and electricity bills.

I bought the Rabbit Air MinusA2 hoping the extra cost could give me a final solution to the endless purchase of lesser systems. The Air Minus system is made of quality material and the design in which it draws air from the periphery of the front cover is quite attractive. (Not a typical radiator design) I chose the pet allergy custom filter for my specific needs and installation of the filter set and start of operation was a snap in about 15 minutes. The system was indeed quiet with the only the highest two settings making significant background noise. In normal operation I set the system to the middle (3) setting. The noise at this setting is barely noticeable. Since I did not want to wait months to see my utility bill or stand outside and watch my meter, I bought a power meter (P3 International P4460 Kill A Watt EZ Electricity Usage Monitor) thru Amazon and made a check. At the lowest setting, the Rabbit Air MinusA2 used 7 Watts and at the middle setting used only 14 Watts; the highest turbo setting came in at 46 Watts. This electrical usage is as advertised and makes the Rabbit Air MinusA2 a system I can leave on 24 hrs and still use less electricity than my older systems. I have since bought a second system for the upstairs of the house. I have them set at the middle setting during the day and run them in sleep mode during the night. I clean the pre-filter about once a month with a hand vacuum. The mood light is bright and I usually leave it off. There is an air quality sensor that changes the speed of the purifier based on the particles it detects. At first, I thought this was a gimmick, but if you are dusting or vacuuming, and stirring up dust, the sensor detects that added particles and steps up the system to a higher mode to clear the air. This air sensor system is quite sensitive and is a very good gauge on the air quality in the house.

In summary, the low power consumption more than makes up for the higher initial cost. I save on average $20 - $25/month/system in electricity costs over the older systems, etc. The low noise operation allows me to keep the system on at night with no disturbance and provides better air as I sleep. As far as the systems ability to clear the air, if I have a significant intrusion of cat dander brought in by friends or family, it usually takes 24 - 48 hours to clear the air back to normal - which is what I would expect for a typical 3-4 bedroom house. The dust accumulation in the house has been reduced and the overall air quality in the house seems better. I have had the systems just over a year at this point and am planning to get new filter sets. There has been no noticeable reduction in system performance at 1 year and I hope that continues.

My review is more of a personal story than a technical review as you can find all of the tech info about this product elsewhere. I am sure there our other folks out there who will be able to relate to what I relay below and I have not seen other reviews (of almost any air purifying product) like it, so I though that I would chime in...

My fiance has asthma and suffers from severe allergies - both seasonal and pet related. We have 3 dogs and she has suffered for years with asthma flair-ups because of them - to the point where she was constantly miserable, could not breath, and would need to take 2-3 doses of albuterol per day just to cope. Bedtime was especially difficult and it was extremely rare for her to not need the medication then.

We tried everything...doctor visits, allergy medications of all sorts, moving our bedroom to every room in the house...putting filters on our fans and A/C...leaving the windows closed or open...using a variety of (less expensive) air purifiers - both HEPA and Ionic. Nothing worked and she was in constant misery.

Enter the Minus A2. I was out of ideas and doing my Amazon homework about air purifiers, once again, when I came across this unit. It was expensive but I decided to spend the money and try it out. I could always return it.

It arrived quickly and well-packaged. In fact, everything about this product says "quality". I set it up and ran it (I opted for the Pet Allergy extra filter) for a few hours that night while she was at work. As soon as she entered the living room she noticed the improvement in the air quality. We moved it upstairs and, lo and behold, she did not need to use her medication for the fist night in months! For 2 weeks now we have moved it between downstairs during the day and upstairs at night and she has only had to use the pump 1 time - and that was after she cleaned the house for 4 hours one day. This product has been truly amazing. I really thought she would never find comfort in our house again but things are so much better now and it has made everything about our time in the house better.

We have yet to try it out in full allergy season but I will be buying another one before then so the whole house can be covered all the time. This was literally a saving grace type of product for us and I could not recommend it highly enough. I cannot guarantee it will work as well for others as it did for us, but we are highly satisfied.

Just as an aside...we tend to run the product on medium or higher speed. It makes a bit of noise but we like the white noise at night for sleeping so we leave it set there. I cannot vouch for how well it filters on the lower speed but the Low/silent speeds are very quiet indeed - if that is what you need. The lights on it are bright but we turn off the mood light and face the unit towards a wall to deflect the power light. I am a light sleeper but the added light does not bother me.

I hope this helps and we highly recommend this unit.

I purchased this about three months ago. My first impression out of the box was "oh hey, it's white!" I'm sure some, or most, of you will go "DUH!" but I had been looking at the other Rabbits and they were all silver so stupid me assumed this was silver. The mood light generally runs blue or you can switch the color, but the plain whiteness makes me not want to display this. Maybe I'm being picky but I really didn't/don't like the look.

It has the ability to mount to a wall or can rest on the floor. The mood light can actually be turned off (YES!!!) unless you want to use it as a night light.

Now to the important part... the filtering. I snagged the Toxin filter style because I assume that apartments always have toxins. According to the reading, they mine don't. (It has a light that is supposed to tell you when the air is polluted).

I have allergies and I didn't notice a BIT of difference with my allergies between having this and not. I was still sniffling and sneezing during my entire allergy setting. According to the air filter, there was nothing in the air. I took it off of automatic and put it on high manually and I still didn't notice a difference.

My purpose of purchase was to get out the allergies and this filter has not done a bit of good. Occasionally when I clean in the bathroom or cook something a little to well done, the sensor will turn red, but mostly it's a healthy blue (which means nothing in the air folks).

This device did not meet my expectations and for the price, I really can not see any value. I noticed no reduction of allergies even after showering and changing clothes. I believe I could have received the same quality by purchasing (2) cheap $[...] air purifiers at a wallmart or costco or something and still saved $[...]. If I'm paying out that much money, I expect some results.

Moving away from the product and to the company: I ordered and received the product within about three days and it came packaged well and in good condition. I just with the product had come close to my expectations.

Note... I accidentally hit two stars. Amazon isn't letting me edit it to one star. Obviously I see no value in this product so pretend it's a one star.

This unit was bigger than I expected it to be, and not as quiet as I thought it would be either. It's not loud, but on medium to high settings you can clearly hear the motor going, I can only sleep easily with it on the lowest setting.

As for clearing the air, it does that decently well. Doesn't do too much as far as trapping dust, but it does remove a lot of airborne allergens. I noticed a week after buying this that I breathed a bit easier and my sinuses were more clear in my room than it was outside or in other people's houses.

For the price, it works well enough. You can probably buy a better one at a more expensive price.

No where in the reviews did it say that it was an ionizer so we bought it. We had it on for one night, it did a great job cleaning the air and was quiet but when I went to go break down the packaging, I noticed teeny tiny print on the bottom of the box that said: warning: includes ionizer that produces ozone. do not use if you have asthma.

We were both quite upset that we didn't see this warning on Amazon before we bought it. Had to return it! False advertising!

I reviewed dozens of air purifiers in the search for the best, low-price one with a HEPA filter that did not use Ionizing technology (which appears to be especially risky for people with asthma). I purchased the Honeywell HFD-110 Quietclean Tower thinking I had found the perfect match...

...that is until the package arrived and the fine print on the box said that this was a "HEPA-Type" filter (ie. NOT a HEPA filter, which means not certified to the high standard of a HEPA filter). When you look at the filter up close it looks nothing like the HEPA filters I have seen (not dense at all, quite the opposite).

To make matters worse the HFD-110 IS an Ionizing air purifier (and you cannot turn this feature off), contrary to the Manufacturer's Description which would have you believe otherwise, "Compared to ionic air purifiers, the filter from the HFD-110 captures 12 times more pollutants..."

Look, I think this would otherwise be a decent Ionizing, Generic-Filter Air Purifier if it was presented honestly in the manufacturer's description.

Considering that I was COMPLETELY MISLEAD into buying exactly what I did not want, I will think twice before ever buying a Honeywell product again!

I noticed a difference right away! I have a small studio apartment and once I plugged this into the wall, my air was really clean within hours. I noticed a huge difference with my allergies. I also have a cat so the usual 'cat smell' that can linger was gone. I have friends that are severly allergic to cats, so I tested it out with them. I had the machine on high for about two hours, then invited them over. They had no symptoms in the 3 hours they were there! I bought the Quietclean Tower a couple months ago. I like it except for the fact that it is not "quiet" at all. I can sleep with it all night only on the lowest setting. It seems to clean the air well but DOES have a ionizer which I do not remember seeing on the ad. It acts like a fan, which I like as it moves air very well. Other than the sound I think it is a good air cleaner. It captures lots of dust and the filters are easy to clean.

I will echo all of the positive reviews seen here and add some extra information.

Reading the various reviews, people may be worried if they are finding the right model in the stores, and if the model inside has the lifetime HEPA filter or not. The box may say permanent or it may say something else, with a sticker that says "permanent filter inside". This is all you need to know. I don't think it's even possible to find inventory that still contains the replaceable filter.

As a torture test, we put our unit in the kitchen when we roasted greasy chickens over the 2008 holidays. This usually stinks out our apartment for a week, and it still did. It was too much greasy smoke for the Honeywell. Worse yet, after moving the unit back to the office, there was a roast chicken scent for another 5 or 6 days. I was about to replace the one month-old carbon pre-filter, but then it finally wore off and now the unit seems as fresh as new.

But roast chickens aside, the difference in air quality in the office and bedroom (we move this unit around daily from home to office) is very impressive. Dust is down, chemical odors are gone, (I sell glue and solvents), and the computers are staying clean. (When we had an ionic breeze, the electronics would attract more dirt, and the air would be dusty, now the air is clean and so is the equipment).

I did so much research before buying this and I am very happy I chose this unit. I run it on low for about 16 hours a day, occasionally on high after making the bed in the morning, and only turn it off at night (for silence).

I'm considering getting a second one, but then its so easy to move...

Update: March 11th 2009, used every day since December 11th (3 months) and still working perfectly and very effective, without any filter change or vacuuming. The only odd thing is that the filter indicator lights seem unchanged so maybe they don't work. I don't know, but I will try to wait another three months before changing the pre-filter and vacuuming the permanent HEPA filter.

I'm not too sure what to say...is it bad? no...is it great? no. I bought this to help purify the air in my office here in Afghanistan. Let's just say to start that is no easy task!! The unit seems to be functioning well enough but it's a little on the loud side and it really drops the temperature in a room. It has not had any issues and seems to be working...as I said, the air here is terrible to begin with so it's hard to say if it's really making a dent. I'd like to think it is.

It is somewhat large, but it seems to work really well. quiet mode is really really quiet. essentially, from what i gather, the fan works on a minimum air flow system. so the more clogged up the filter becomes, the more the fan works to maintain the air flow, once it gets to a certain point, it lets you know you have to replace it.

in between replacing filters i've used tissue paper over the air intake, it seems to work pretty well, not as well, but good enough.

large, but worth it i think, the way it spits out air helps keep the room circulating, just makes it nicer all around.

i give it 4 because if your loaded, i'm sure there's something better, but for the average joe, its good. i've had mine for over three years now, running almost the whole time without issue.

This is an all around great air purifier. I live in a turn of the century home with wood floors. Prior to owning the Filtrete, dust and dog hair covered our main floor. It doesn't explicitly state it in the product description, but the Air Purifier comes with a permanent HEPA filter and one pre-filter. The pre-filter is supposed to be changed every three months and the HEPA filter is supposed to be vacuum cleaned every six months. The pre-filters cost between $10 and $15. I've only had it running for several says and the pre-filter is already covered with dust, so it's really doing what it's supposed to be doing. What's more is that the air is so clean and crisp. The instructions say that you should run the air purifier 24 hours a day, but I think that's a huge waste of energy and only run it when I'm in the room, which seems to work just fine. It does make a lot of noise, but it's white noise, like a window air conditioner or a box fan. I almost didn't buy it because of I was afraid the noise would keep me up at night, but was pleasantly surprised that the white noise helps me sleep more soundly through the night.

I own two of these air filters and I love them. These air filters do an excellent job of cleaning the air in relatively short order and I keep these air filters in the bedrooms for clean air sleeping. I recently moved into a older house that has dirty HVAC ducting and while I am slowly cleaning those ducts out I needed a temporary fix. Additionally, I own a dog that sheds a lot and I have a child with severe allergies. Additionally, I am also an allergy sufferer (mold and cats). After doing extensive research on air filters, I decided to go with this Honeywell 50100 HEPA filter. There are a couple of reasons for decision. 1) The overall cost of this filter is the lowest (unit + replacement filters) I found at the time. I bought the unit for around $80. The average HEPA filter replacement is around $20. 2) The second reason I bought this unit is that I like noise. This is not one of those whisper quiet HEPA filters and that is OK by me. I am a big fan of white noise (after all I have two kids that like to get up early and make noise). This unit on its lowest setting is fairly quiet. However, the medium setting is loud and the high setting sounds like a jet passing overhead. Most of the time I have the unit set on medium. This is loud enough to drown out the garbage man picking up trash at 4 am. I have been happy with Honeywell products in the past and this is no exception. I also own a larger Honeywell HEPA filter that uses the same filter type as these units so I buy them in bulk. These filters also use a prefilter that goes around the outside of the HEPA filter. Using this filter extends the life of the HEPA filter tremendously. I vacuum the prefilter every couple of months or so. I recommend this filter to anyone who appreciates a well made decently priced HEPA filtration unit and doesn't mind a bit of noise.

I sleep with a fan on.

I always have. Even a small fan on low, enough to make some white noise, and make a gentle breeze. Been doing this since I was a wee tyke.

I've used many fans over the years, but the one thing they all had in common was they all got dust on the blades quite bad, and much sooner than you'd think, because they ran all night.

I had a honeywell 11520 purifier to help me with asthma and allergies.

It helped, but it wasn't a night and day difference.

Enter the 17005.

I have mine sitting on it's side, pointing at my pillow, on low 24/7.

A quiet gentle breeze of fresh air, no dust to clean off the blades, just replace the pre-filter when it gets dirty, and vacuum out the outside of the filter.

I sleep better, the dust is much reduced, I sleep in a 'bubble' of clean air.

If you use a fan when you sleep, try using this instead. You will throw your fan in the trash.

(Also, I wake up able to see clearly right away, no need to rub my eyes in order for them to focus right away.)

You will honestly feel better when you wake up and you don't need a big noisy unit, because you're running it on low speed, right where you need the fresh air.

The owner's manual says the filter will need to be replaced every 1-3 years; so that's kind of a disappointment. I recently started experiencing allergy symptoms and my doctor recommended possibly picking up an air filter. I was assuming I might have to pay as much as a couple hundred dollars for anything with decent quality, but this product definitely proved me wrong.

It is fairly quiet, has four main settings and has made a significant difference in the air quality of my room. I've noticed the collection of dust in my room has decreased and some of the allergy-related symptoms I was having have gone away.

My 10 month-old daughter has had a humidifier in her room during the winter months, and with summer coming up, I was worried about her being able to sleep without some similar white noise. Initially, I thought I'd get some sort of electronic "nature sounds" type of device, but I figured I should spend a little more and get an item that actually *does* something other than make noise.

Keep in mind, my goal wasn't to find something that was whisper quiet. And in my past experiences with other air purifiers, the quiet ones don't seem to accomplish much anyway.

After reading the reviews here, I decided to give the Honeywell 17000 a shot. I'm definitely glad I did! On the Medium setting, it's almost exactly as loud as the Holmes 2-gallon evaporative wick humidifier that we've been using. It also moves a LOT of air, even at the Low setting.

One of the things I really liked about this particular model, is that the HEPA filter is a semi-permanent low-maintenance type, with a wraparound prefilter that gets replaced. Unlike most of the tower and EnviraCare air purifiers, the replacement prefilter is really cheap and easy to find.

Also, compared to other air purifiers in this price range, the Honeywell 17000 is built like a tank.

A minor additional note: This item may be eligible for FSA reimbursement, if you have allergies and participate in an FSA program. Because it's portable, you don't have to do a cap-ex worksheet for reimbursement.

This filter has filtered just fine, though the filter check feature using the buttons does not seem to work. It would be nice to now when the carbon pre-filter needs changing without guessing. Also, Honeywell's website claims this product's HEPA filter never needs changing, but the product box and the manual seem to indicate that it should be replaced every five years. Still doing research on that one.

My allergies are slightly better, but not completely gone from the clean air this HEPA filter produces. I can tell the air is cleaner and carries less cat hair, dust, mold, etc, so this is a good thing. It isn't very quiet, you can hear the filter, even on low. Overall I am glad we got this filter, it may be big and clunky, but it works.

I received this unit as a Christmas gift (I've been suffering from some pretty nasty allergies), and I love it! It's fairly loud and high-throughput at the two higher speed settings, but it's whisper-quiet at the lowest setting and creates a pleasant gentle breeze. I've got it positioned under my (quite large) desk, so I usually run it at the lowest speed when I'm working at my desk and at the second-highest speed the rest of the time. It's a great white noise machine at the higher setting (we've got several neighbors with dogs), and it really has improved my allergies.

If I leave it off for a day or two, I start to feel the difference in the morning with stuffy nose and scratchy throat. It's been incredibly helpful. Also, the fact that it has a little series of lights to remind you when to change the filters is great. I haven't had to replace them yet (yay!), though it looks like I'll have to put in a new filter in 2-3 months. This is probably one of the best gifts I've received.

Prior to purchasing the Rabbit Air BioGS (model 582A - covers 780 sq. ft.) This may have been related to installation of an attic and insulation as well as repair of water damage where black mold was growing. We removed the black mold using a bleach water mixture. We then tried an ozonator (Living Air) and electrostatic filters (Sharper Image) over a period of weeks but they did not help. However, the very same night that we put the Rabbit Air BioGS Model 582A in the bedroom, we saw an improvement in our symptoms.

I'm very happy with the product and this review doesn't stop here. I've comfortable that Rabbit Air will continue to support the product based on the experience we had with the first unit which arrived in a box that had been handled roughly. Upon inspecting the package, we found the product damaged and immediately called Rabbit Air. Their customer service answered on the second ring and without transferring me, they were able to ask a few questions and in less than 5 minutes, I was off the phone. A new unit showed up the very next day and the shipper picked up the damaged unit on the same visit! Now that's the definition of excellent customer service!

The product carries a five year warranty and when taking into account that Rabbit Air actually answers the phone with a live person, it really leaves me a confidence that they will be there if we do run into warranty related issues or questions.

Rabbit Air also offers a filter replacement reminder service. This is also a great feature since some of the filters require replacement in 18 months to 3 years. In this period of time, I know that a reminder will be nice although, there is a filter replacement indicator built into the unit.

We would strongly recommend the Rabbit Air BioGS Model 582A to anybody that has a need to reduce odors and dust/pollen/smoke from a room. We are completely satisfied with the company and the product at this point. Bottom line: The product works exactly as the product description implies and it is very well supported.

I gave this BiosGS 582 a five-star rating because Amazon doesn't allow for 10-stars.

I'm a pipe and cigar smoker. I recently (following divorce) moved into a house of my own and turned one of the bedrooms into a "smoking room" where I could enjoy my pipes and cigars while reading. I ordered the BiosGS 582 as a way of keeping the air clear while I smoke. Lord! Does it ever work. I had hoped that the air cleaner would keep the smoke from "polluting" the rest of the house. It even keeps the smoke from polluting the smoking room. Nowhere in the house -- not even in the smoking room -- can anyone tell that there's a smoker in residence.

There've been comments about the unit's noise level. Yes, when I light up a cigar and it kicks into turbo mode, it's clearly audible. But not so overwhelming that I cannot carry on an easy conversation with any visitors. It's like a fan blowing in the background. OK, in truth is IS a fan blowing in the background, audible but not at all oppressive or disturbing.

If you're a smoker and want to spare others in the home from the odors or from secondhand smoke, this is the unit for you.

As an amusing antidote, I recently came home after driving on some of Oklahoma's particularly dusty dirt roads (I now live in Arkansas). I walked into the smoking room to put some things away and the unit kicked on because of the dust on my clothing. Now that's sensitive.

Again, I don't have enough good words to say about this BioSG 582; but I strongly recommend it to anyone who has a concern about clean air.

Every other review says exactly what I would. I bought 2 because I had a smoker live underneath me and it has performed very well getting rid of the must smoke smell.

PLEASE NOTE, the only difference between the BioGS(tm) SPA-582A and the BioGS(tm) SPA-421A is the motor size. The filter sizes are exactly the same! Meaning, you can save some money and buy the cheaper one. I bought one 582A and one 421A and both work very well in even the largest room in my house. Looking back, I could have saved some money if I just bought the "smaller" one.

This product arrived before I expected it and in perfect condition. It was slightly larger than I thought it would be. The air in our home does seem crisper in the room where it is placed. I have been able to dramatically reduce the amount of allergy medication I need to take since purchasing this purifier. The display is a little bright for use in a bedroom. To solve that problem, I taped a small piece of black paper over it and simply lift it when I want to change the settings with the remote.

I just replaced one of my old Holmes HAP240 (I own 5) with the newer and more modern looking HAP2400. Holmes is GREAT because not only the products are nice looking and priced right, many of Holmes models use the same filter. By doing this you do not have to order filters direct from the company because often your local WalMart will carry a replacement filter. I also use Swifter cloths (or Walmart brand Swifter Dust BOSS) in front a new filter to save $MONEY$ :o) Been doing it for years now!

Papers & books breakdown. Ask any bookstore in the mall. Next, let's talk about the (2) types of dirt...outside & people. Then, there's all the chemi-kills your house is built out of, the mold, and the chemicals it takes to clean it. The Environmental Protection Agency says inside pollution is 2 to 5 times worse than outside. Monitors are dust collectors. PC's suck in dust all day. Electronics act like a huge magnet pulling in yuck from all sides of the room, and then you sit your face by it for hours at a time...dust is a problem.

So, you can spend half a grand and get some ozone poisoning if you like, to kill off everything in the house. Just take out a loan and buy a Sharper Image stick cleaner. They work. The reason they don't use a fan is because the ions push the air around.

However, for the rest of us...Holmes has a good solution. HEPA filtration was like nuclear submarine quality about a decade ago. No one had this because we couldn't afford it. Today, these little units start at just under thirty bucks. I got the HAP2400, and somehow filled the pre-filter face in less than 15 days. But, I don't know how...my room was clean! I'm reading smoke, pet, molds, but I don't have these problems. That's when I learned about the magnets in the computers, and the normal level of junk in the air. I think I read that 90% of your time is spent at home. If you saw the stuff I pulled down, why wouldn't you get one of these? I feel like I just vacuumed the air. Replacement filers only run about ten bucks, and they last 3-4 months.

Negative side:

- I read that small particles out the back of the unit don't wash off easy if you don't replace the filter on a normal basis.

- I'm not big on negative ions because I don't know enough about them.

(I'm going to see if I get rid of my paper piles, if that helps...dust is N-Asty!)

I purchased the Alen T300 this February and I've been pretty happy with the results. However, my major complaint comes from the fact that the UV lamp has already burned out and it just seems a bit ludicrous to have to replace a $79 lamp in four months. Of course, it's not covered under the warranty so along with replacing the filters for $45 every 6 months, now I have to replace the UV lamp even sooner. I don't know about you but it seems a bit steep!

We've had this in our bedroom for about a year, with no problems. We run it 24 hours a day on the lowest setting, and the noise is not noticeable across the room when we're sleeping. Anything higher than LOW, however, is quite noisy, despite the claims. Operation is fairly easy, and maintenance is simple. Taking off the back cover reveals the two HEPA filters, which fit into two close fitting spaces. These are easily removed. The HEPA filters have a foam back pre-filter attached by Velcro-type tape. We vacuum these covers or wash them if they are particularly dirty, about twice a month. I have not had any problem replacing the back cover. If you line up the proper tab with the appropriate hole, and snap the top in, there is a beep which indicates the back is properly closed. There is an LED readout on the unit which purports to let you know when you need to replace the HEPA filters. The colors of the lights change from green to yellow to red. Supposedly when all the LED indicators turn red you need to replace the filters. I have no idea whether this is true. After twelve months the air is still noticeably cleaner in our room, and my wife's allergies are much better. I would buy this again.

I have been using the T300 for a few weeks now. It is a very nice Air Purifier. Its is a little loud on its highest setting but still not as loud as other Purifiers I have used. It has a lot of nice features like UAV light which can be turned off and on. It also has an ionizer which helps a lot if you have animals. The air smells fresher after only a few hours.

However I brought this unit mainly for dust removal. My room has a lot of dust, more than the average room and this unit while does filter a lot of the air, still can not make a dent in the amount of dust in my room. My room is about 170 square feet and used to be an attic. I don't think I can really blame the filter. I have watched it when the light hits my room just right, and I can see it takes in tons of dust. After a week I could not longer see any black parts on the pre-filter it was completely covered with layers of dust. While this filter might not be the best one for my room I will continue to use it seeing as I can't afford the more expensive units.

I bought this fan when my roommate and I got 2 kittens. Not only was the weather getting hotter, but we didn't want to have to worry about our allergies acting up due to the kittens. It has been on nonstop for almost a month now and we have had no problems with it - it works very well and keeps our apartment nice and cool. Also, if you have small children or pets, you don't have to worry because the slits where the air comes out are small and the fan is built deep inside of the fan so it is safe. I have 3 cats so I need a good air filter. I ordered two to place at two strategic places in my house. The units are so quiet I sometimes have to check that they are working. I have had this particular air purifier for a year and a half now and have loved it! I would have given it 5 stars but the replacement filters are a bit pricey.

I have this in the room with my guinea pigs and computer and all my paper files so there is a lot of dust and dander in addition to hay that the guinea pigs eat. The room is slightly larger than recommended but it has not been a problem. The odor control is great and this is the least dusty room in the house since we bought it. It has been run non-stop for the year and a half we have had it except to change filters. On very rare occasions it will seem loud. I usually vacuum the front grill and shake it out (hay tends to fall in) and this resolves the loudness.

I am getting ready to purchase one for each of our 3 bedrooms. I would just check the filter replacement costs first and decide if you want to spend that much. Otherwise, this is a great air purifier for the price!

I bought this unit in December and regularly use it overnight in my bedroom with the door closed. On two occasions, it helped alert me that our natural gas was leaking. I live in an old 1940s apartment with a conventional gas stove with two pilot lights, and it's not unusual for the pilot lights to go out. However, it's not easy to notice the natural gas smell if you've been inside for a long time getting used to the smell.

So one morning I wake up, and when I walk out of my bedroom, I smell a STRONG natural gas smell because both pilot lights were out overnight, allowing natural gas to leak throughout our apartment. My roommate noticed the smell, too, although he didn't have an air purifier in his room. Two days later, ONE of the pilot lights goes out overnight and I notice the smell again, but it's not as strong this time. My roommate without the air purifier DID NOT notice the smell. My bedroom was the safe haven that helped me distinguish clean air from toxic air.

This is a very handy, small, and not-too-noisy unit. I have thoroughly enjoyed using it, and besides filtering out natural gas, I have noticed a difference in filtering out dust, etc, in my old dusty apartment.

It is true that this unit is discontinued, so stock up on replacement filters while you can. Filters are available on amazon: Hamilton Beach TrueAir 04712 Allergen Reducing Filter. When I purchased this unit in December 2008, I could tell it was about to be discontinued, so I bought five extra filters. They recommend that you replace them every 4-6 months, but that's probably only if you leave it on max power 24/7. Use your own judgement. I don't have it on all the time, and when I do run it, it's on medium or low. I don't expect to replace the filters but once every 1-2 years. That means this will last me 5-10 years with the extra filters I stocked up on. There are also plenty of other air purifiers out there that probably work just as well.

Found filters online at filters-now.com, they make a replacement that fits this machine for about $13 each, flat rate shipping of $8 so I will order several replacements at once.

I bought these about a year ago and now one is broken. Like other reviewers the red "clean" light came on and no matter how much I clean the thing it won't go off. When I contacted the company about it (which was no easy task. it required calling several different numbers and talking to countless different people, most of whom didn't really understand English) their response was basically "too bad". The second one is still working, but I wonder for how much longer. These purifiers never were that great to begin with. The air didn't feel any cleaner than if I just opened the windows to my apartment and aired it out a little. The only thing they really did was get rid of the stuffy winter feel (but as I said before this can also be solved by just opening the windows for a few minutes). They also didn't help at all with my allergies (the main reason I bought them). The car purifiers are completely worthless. They don't do anything. Overall, I wish I had saved my money and bought something more useful.

I found this one and read the reviews and decided to try it. For less than half the price of the Blue Air, it covers a wider area for less maintenance costs. It was easy to set up, attractive to look at and it works! I had been using two Oreck table top purifiers that worked okay for lifting odors but didn't do a thing for my allergies. I have an older house and two dogs. Like clock work every night before bed, I would have a major sneezing fit (I blame old musty house dust). Since plugging in this unit, I have not had a sneezing fit or a coughing fit. I sleep better and the house just smells fresher. I move it from the den into my bedroom every evening. After a couple of weeks of researching air purifiers I decided to purchase this one because the reviews were great, the cost wasn't too high compared to other units, and I liked the fact that it comes in different colors. I received my purifier much sooner than anticipated and was a little stunned by how big the unit is. I'm not sure why I had thought the unit would be smaller. It's definately not monsterous, but in my mind I pictured a smaller unit. I love the color and how easy it was to set up. I have to say, before purchasing this unit, I would wake up in the middle of the night with a scratchy, itchy throat, stuffy nose, and sneezing, and every morning would consist of sneezing up a storm and blowing my nose for the first half hour. From the very first night I started using this machine, all of that has stopped. I occasionally will wake up in the morning with an itchy nose, but definately nothing like what I used to go through before I purchased this unit. What's more, even though the unit is in my bedroom (I always keep the door open), I can tell that it's working in the rest of my house as well. My daughter doesn't sneeze as much and we have both stopped taking our allergy meds all together.

Not only is it great for allergens, dust, and the like, but my bedroom always smells clean, even if I have been cooking and the rest of the house smells like the food I have just made. I used to have a problem with odors living in my bedroom, but not anymore!

As far as the noise level is concerned, I can honestly say that at the lowest setting I can't even hear it, even though the unit is only a few feet from my bed. In the second setting, it's just like a low hum. In the third setting, which is what I set mine on when I am in the room sleeping, it's obviously louder, but it is not distracting and I have had no difficulty falling asleep with it on that high. I find it a great way to drown out outside noises. I have to admit that I don't use the fourth setting too much, but I have used it on occasion and haven't found it to be distracting either.

I was skeptical at first, even after reading all these reviews, but honestly, this unit works!! I am going to buy another one to put in the main part of my house. I only wish they made a smaller one to put in my daughter's room, who likes to sleep with the door shut (go figure!). I definately am recommending this unit to my friends and family!

I bought this because the previous resident at our place had an inside dog. We vacuumed and shampooed the carpets in an attempt to get all the allergens out of the room. However, I was still waking up with a sore throat in the mornings. Once I put this in the room and let it run overnight (on low) the problems went away. After a few weeks of letting it run 24/7, I moved it to another room and I still sleep pretty well.

Alot of people who reviewed this said it was extremely loud, but I don't find it to be very bad. When running on low, it sounds like you have a small fan running in the room. If you run it on high, it does get louder, but still not enough to bother me. I was able to sleep with it running on low about 6 feet from the bed.

Got this purifier after much reading the reviews in Amazon. Was sceptic about the noise level till I have one. It is indeed noisy in a very quiet Air-condition room, but the noise level would be relatively the same when in an open room with fans.

On the note for its performance, my son whom is allergic to dust and will normally sneeze when he wakes up in the morning, is not sneezing in the morning after using the purifier. So far, the purifier does what it meant to do and hence I gave it a 4 stars (1 star less for its noise level though I understand it is inevitable based on its specifications.)

Happy with the product and will consider to have 1 in each room.

This one had a HEPA filter, which is the most important feature for people with asthma or allergies, and the price was not so high that I felt it would be a financial stress during these economic times. After the fist few days of use I was sleeping much better and my asthma was gone when I was at home. In addition, I wasn't sneezing from the high pollen count! I've had this air purifier for almost a year now. I'm a college student, and there is a ton of disgusting black dust in the apartment dorm that I'm living in. This cleaner does an amazing job picking up great amounts of dust, hair, and other particles which you can see on the black pre-filter. While it is loud on the "high" setting, it works just fine on the "low" setting. A good idea is to put it on "high" when you are out of the room, and when you come back, set it on "low".

For almost a year of using it without ever shutting it off, I've never had a problem with it. The air smells clean and the filter does its job. What more could you ask for? If you're looking for an air filter for a bedroom or office, this is the perfect choice.

Perhaps the difference lies in airflow or filter design.

Judging by many other reviews, what happened to me seems to be quite rare, so make of it what you will. But our Honeywell just completely stopped working.

I bought this primarily for my wife's allergies and we used it for a couple of months during the pollen season. It worked as others have described. It was put away for several months and then plugged in again and it's simply dead. There is no response at all even though nothing happened to the unit and it simply sat dormant for a few months.

Hate to give it the rock-bottom review but there was no reason for this thing to just stop working. I kept thinking there must be a simple reset button on it or something but it seems fairly simple. The electronic controls just quietly passed away while sleeping, it would seem.

This is a fantastic air purifier. I bought two of them to replace Oreck Tabletop XL Professional Air Purifiers (a costly waste of money). I use one of the Honeywell 18155 SilentComfort Permanent, True HEPA Air Purifier in my bedroom and leave it on the high setting at all times. On this setting it is very quiet and doesn't disturb my rest at all. On the lowest setting it is so quiet I can barely hear it. Since placing this unit in my bedroom I sleep straight through the night and I wake with clear sinuses and no congestion.

The second Honeywell is in my living room. My living room and dining room share a large combined space and this unit is small for the area. Because they are quiet I plan on getting another unit for the dining area - two of them should handle the area well.

I do a thorough dusting and cleaning every week, so I was shocked at the amount of dust, cat hair and "stuff" that was trapped in the charcoal pre-filter the first time I cleaned it, and in subsequent cleanings. I don't smoke, I do have three cats and have allergies to dust and pollen. These purifiers are truly a life saver!

I bought this due to price and design - and brand: honeywell sounds good. I read people complaining about the noise, but when I got it I felt it was an acceptable level of noise.

I had this unit running for two months now, and suddenly the noise became intolerable. The way I can describe it is as a vibrating rattle as if the enclosure holding the fan motor was coming apart.

I am past my return period by a few days and would have got stuck with out of pocket shipping fees + 15% restocking according to return policy.

To make matters worse, I took it apart to clean it and was not impressed with the little amount of "dust and gunk" that came out of it. Don't expect this thing to filter out as many pollutants as are claimed on the video! It's just a fancy fan.

This is a fantastic product. I bought this unit to replace an Oreck Tabletop XL Professional Air Purifier (a complete waste of money). I use it in a storage room where I keep my cats' litter boxes. I have three cats and they tend to kick up quite a bit of litter dust.

The Honeywell 50250 99.97% Pure HEPA Round Air Purifier is heavy duty and is recommended for large rooms; it is actually large for the room I have it in, but it is very effective. The purifier pulls air in on all sides and expels clean air from venting around the top of the unit. The expelled air is cool and creates quite a draft so this may be a consideration when used. On the "high" and "medium" settings this purifier is loud; on the "low" setting it is fairly quiet (but not as quiet as the Honeywell Silent Comfort model).

Overall I am very satisfied with this product. I have noticed a major decrease in the amount of litter dust that seemed to coat everything in the room prior to using this purifier. When I change the charcoal pre-filter I can't believe the amount of very fine litter dust (powder), dust and cat hair the filter has trapped. It is also very effective in controlling litter box odor and the musty smell that seems to haunt closets and storage rooms.

I got this purifier to go in a room in which I keep kittens that I foster for the local animal shelter. The dander flies, as you can imagine. After the air purifier had run for about a week, the air was MUCH cleaner and the room smelled fresher. I am very happy with the quality and performance of this air purifier. It has 3 speeds and the highest one is very noisy. I don't think you could talk over it or watch TV with it set at that speed. I leave it set on the middle setting and the noise is tolerable. The size of the room in which it's located is about 10' x 12' and it takes care of that size room with no problem. I would definitely recommend this product.

Had this product running constantly in a small room for about 6 months. I know it did something at least, because I had to clean both filters frequently due to dust. But it never did much of anything against the cigarette smell (I don't smoke, but the rest of the house does). After a few months it began to emit a seriously bad odor. I cleaned everything and let it sit for a few weeks, then let it run for a couple of hours outside. The smell remained. This was the latest addition to my allergy free zone (aka my bedroom). Along with washing bed linens weekly, employing mattress and pillow protectors, dusting, and never letting our pets in the room, this HEPA filter has helped me and my spouse breath easier at night. We both snore a little softer, and wake up with less crud in our noses & throats. The room the filter is in is slightly bigger than the recommended dimensions, but it seems to work okay. It's a HEPA filter... so it's noisy... but it does have three fan settings as well as an ionic option. We use the "quiet" fan at night... which drowns out soft snoring and heavy breathing. On that setting, the fan is more than loud enough to hear through the ear plugs I sleep in.

So far so good had it for about 5 weeks and its still chumming away. After the second week i could tell dirt was beginning to build up on the filter and its very tolerable on low. The ionizer started making clicking noises for some reason so i turned it off, they sound like little static discharges, but are unnoticeable unless actually try to listen. Haven't turned it off since i got it, only thing with filters like these is that the motor may burn out so ill turn it off soon to give it a rest.

While you do have to cut the filter to size yourself, it's pretty easy using the included guide. Once cut to the proper dimensions the pre-filter works very well to remove dust and odors from your room.

Should be a little less than five stars for the extra material leftover after trimming (unless you can find some way to repurpose the excess.)

I bought this filter replacement for my "Honeywell 50100 Enviracaire Air Purifier." The filter came with scored lines and directions for cutting for each model, but they didn't work my air purifier, so I had to cut them myself, which was annoying since the filters are difficult to cut through.

Filter is excellent. The only drawback is having to cut it to fit the 17000 Honewell model filter. In the end, you end up with some wasteful pieces.
